INFORMATION ABOUT FINANCIAL PART

Based on our interview with MARA, a government agency that provides loans to new entrepreneurs to venture into business or who want to establish their business. There are some loan scheme that provided by MARA. Below are the types of loan schemes established by MARA and the terms and conditions to applicant who wish to apply for the loan;

Factoring Financing Scheme(SPF)

SPF is open to contractors in the following areas:
  • Building contractor Class F, E, D, and C
  • Contractor Supplies
  • Contractor Services

Terms and Conditions;
  • Bumiputera class-citizen aged 18 years and above
  • Have experienced or knowledgeable in the field of the underlying business
  • Full-timed and registered with the PKK, CIDB and The Ministry of Finance.
Financing limits is RM 500,000.00, have no collateral and rate of profit is 6% a year.

Business Improvement Financing Scheme (SPIM)

This loan facility are the purchase of fixed assets (machinery / equipment), renovation of business premises, and working capital. Terms and conditions;

  • Bumiputera class-citizen aged 18 years and above
  • Experience / knowledge in the field of the underlying business
  • Have a license / permit / approval letter from the authorities to conduct such business
  • Can contribute their own capital not less than 10% of the project cost
  • Entrepreneurs should be involved full-time in the business

Financing Limits for Sole Proprietorship/Partnership is RM 250,000.00 and Private Limited Company is RM 500,000.00. The guarantee is fixed monthly income of not less than 3% of total funding request or security of land. The rate of profit for this scheme is 4% per year.

MARA Express Contract Financing Scheme(SPIKE)

SPIKE open to contractors in the following areas;

  • Building Contractor Class F, E, D and C or G1, G2, G3, G4 & G5
  • Contractor SupplieS
  • Contractor Services
  • Electrical Contractor

Terms and Conditions;

  • Bumiputera class-citizen aged 18 years and above
  • Experience / knowledge in the field of the underlying business
  • Full-timed and registered with the PKK, CIDB and The Ministry of Finance
Financing limits is RM 500,000.00. The guarantee divide into two which is  financing RM 250,000.00 to be excluded under the collateral. While funding RM 250,001.00 to RM 500,000.00 will charged collateral or land security. The rate of profit is 6% per year.

Entrepreneur Guarantee Scheme MARA(SJUM)

MARA working with selected commercial banks to offer financing facilities and MARA act as guarantor. Financing facilities available are Cash Line Facility (Cash Facility), Documentary Credit Murabahah Facility (DCM Facility), Murabahah Working Capital Financing Facility (MWCF Facility), Bai Al-Dyan Working Capital Financing Facility and other facilities offered by commercial banks. Terms and Conditions are as follow;

  • Business Bumiputera status Private Limited, Partnership and Sole Proprietor
  • Business has been operating and Audited Financial Statements for at least two years and gained a profit for the last 2 years
  • Paid-up capital of at least 20% of total company credit search Status application is satisfactory based on the statements of BMC / CCRIS / RAM Credit
  • Fulfill the conditions set by commercial banks
Financing Limits for Sole Proprietorship/Partnership is RM 200,000.00-RM500,000.00 and Private Limited Company is RM 200,000.00-RM 2,000,000.00. The guarantee is depends on the terms fixed by Bank and MARA. Besides,  applicants must submit a Business Plan to selected commercial banks or the Office of the MARA is nearby.

 PUTRA Business Financing Program

These loan are eligible for financing for those who want start a business or expand an existing business. Below are the qualifications;

  • Citizen of Malaysia and Bumiputera
  • Aged 18 years old and above
  • Do not require a guarantor
  • Open to all youth

General Funding Scheme

Loans to be applied is on the name of the company. Below are the qualifications;

  • Citizen of Malaysia and Bumiputera
  • Aged 18 years old and above
  • Have experience and knowledge in the underlying business
  • Have license, permit and business location.

Our goal is to make this loan to strengthen our business finances. Strong financial is very important to a business to operate. The terms and conditions are as information given above about this scheme.

SUMMARY OF OPERATION PART

Operation is essential to ensure an organization running well or not. Their operations are copyright of a system in which the desired outputs can be generated with the number (quantity) is required, has the quality (quality) which coincides, on time and place needed, with the least cost and with optimal profit rate.

An organization needs to plan operational activities so that it becomes more efficient, can reduce the costs of production and operation, thus minimizing waste and maximizing production output. Failure to plan and control the activities of production or operations can cause problems such as delays in the receipt of materials, customer dissatisfaction, high rates of wastage and damage to raw materials. This failure may lead to decreased productivity and failure in achieving business goals. Therefore, every organization needs and make preparations for transferring operating properly. For example, how to open a food premise, how to get a license, the expenses of utility (water and electricity bill), food premise equipment and purchase of raw materials.

For the operations, the Happy Family Restaurant selects Soto Nor Cafe as our reference. Soto Nor Café owned by Mr. Salamat Bin Pigi. Mr. Salamat has opened two branches Soto Nor Café. Soto's first branch in Sungai Asap and was opened in 2006. In the meantime, a second branch was opened in 2012 in Bintulu near Fire Station, Bintulu.

What we can conclude from this interview is that if we want to open a Happy Family Restaurant we need to refer to Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) and according to the conditions specified. Among the conditions before applying for a license from Bintulu Development Authority (BDA), the applicant shall register the name of the company in Bintulu District Office. Fee for registration of a business name is RM50.00 and RM25.00 trade license. Thereafter, the applicant must obtain certification business name of Bintulu District Office. Then, the applicant shall be in the form of business license applications from Bintulu Development Authority (BDA).

 The following are the Qualifications and Conditions:

Qualifications:

Applicants must be Malaysian citizen residing in Sarawak. If not, the applicant must have Temporary Employment Pass issued by the Immigration Department of Malaysia, Sarawak.

Conditions:

Food Premise (Tea/Coffee Shop, Food Shop, Restaurant, Bakery)
  • Premises must be located in a shop or commercial areas.
  • Provide a copy of Rental Agreement Premises/title deeds.
  • Food handlers must pass the medical examination has been determined.
  • Premises shall comply with the basic requirements of health.
  • Come to BDA to fulfil the requirements documents for the applications

In terms of supply of raw materials, En.Salamat supply for raw materials forming relationships in large scale for every day and every month and get at a lower price than buying in the market. This way is more efficient and profitable. He also informed us about the need for contingency cost for use during emergencies for example; replace the damaged chairs and tables.

INFORMATION ABOUT MARKETING PART

Mamafy Restaurant is a new restaurant that provides fast food and promised a quick service for customers. For information, Mamafy Restaurant was under the company New World Suit Hotel. Mamafy got two branches that located at Tanjung Kidurong around 22nd October 2013. However in 19 July 2014 Mamafy Restaurant was located at level 3, Park City Mall. Besides, Mamafy gain recognition halal certificate from JAKIM. The main food that provides at Mamafy Restaurant is fried chicken and roasted chicken. We can conclude that Happy Family Restaurant also have our own main food. We provide east food, western food with healthy recipes with family concept. Besides, Mamafy Restaurant also hired all workers from New World Suites Hotel. Now, Mamafy Restaurant still in reserve to enlarge their restaurant to Sabah, Peninsular and China.

Product:

Product is the most important element of the marketing. Product is anything that can offer to a market attention, acquisition, use or consumption that satisfies a need and wants. The main products that provide by Mamafy Restaurant are fried chicken, roasted chicken and also have laksa, burger and so on. Mamafy Restaurant packaging can attract customer to come and eat at their restaurant. All the packaging was designed from China. In addition, Mamafy Restaurant gets chicken supply from Chick One Trading, Kampung Baru. Furthermore, the USP of the product is they only used the fresh chicken to serve their menu.

Price:

Definition of price is amount of money changed for product or service. Price also related to the perceived value at the time of the transaction. It also depends on amount of expected satisfaction be received from the goods or services. It is also targeted at the defined customers and against competitors. There are several pricing strategies, for example premium pricing, penetration strategies, skimming strategies and so on. Furthermore, Mamafy Restaurant put affordable price based on competitor price. They also give reward to their customer with provide coupon for student.

Place:

Place is an important aspect before start the business. Any business organization needs to identify how products are made available to target the customer. Mamafy Restaurant chooses Tanjung Kidurong and Park City Mall because this area is the main place and many people come at there. So, they can attract many customers visit their restaurant.

Promotion:

Promotion is the business of communicating with customers. It will provide information that will assist then in making a decision to purchase a product or service. However successful promotion will increases sales. For Mamafy Restaurant they use advertising as their promotion strategy. They have Facebook account that can connect with anyone. Besides, Mamafy also used board and banner to tell about their restaurant for their customers. Moreover, Mamafy also provide playground, so that parents can let their child play during they eat. They also distributed coupon for student during the school holidays. So, they can attract the whole family to come at Mamafy Restaurant. Furthermore, Mamafy also doing charity with donate to orphan house.


We can conclude that if Happy Family Restaurant want build the success business, we must have a good strategy. For example, find the right place that can attract the customer, which is based on demographic, physiographic, behavior, and geographic. Besides, the product of our restaurant must fulfill the targeted customer also the most important thing. Lastly, every business also must sell at the right price and using suitable promotion to make sure that our product can sales.

INFORMATION ABOUT FINANCIAL PART

To start the business, we need resources of financial. Financial is the main factor in a business. This financial is use for business expenses. 

For financial part, Happy Family chooses Seribu Bintang Restaurant as our references. This restaurant was operated since eight years ago. This restaurant owned by Mr. Zahirudin Khan Asghar Khan and assists by, Mr. Muhammad Uzair Bin Muhammad Azizan and located at No. 1, Jalan Kampung Baru, Sarawak, 97000 Bintulu. Besides, Mr. Uzair graduates in Diploma in Hotel Management. Seribu Bintang Restaurant has another branch that is Bintang Warisan Restaurant. Seribu Bintang Restaurant rent the land to running their business. Seribu Bintang Restaurant operates from 5pm – 1am.

What can we conclude from this interview, Seribu Bintang Restaurant are not make loan from any agency to start their business. However, Mr. Uzair told us that he had made loans to young entrepreneurs Putra of the MARA recently RM 10,000. The loan purpose is to further develop Seribu Bintang Restaurant.

In financial management, Happy family Restaurant can employ a secretary among their workers to manage the bills. Besides that, the secretary also responsible to deal with supplier about the raw material for the next day.Happy Family Restaurant can prepare ‘daily cash tally record’ for secretary to record total cash, peti cash and gross sale on that day. From this record, we can identify the net sales in daily. This is the one of the way Seribu Bintang Restaurant practices to manage their financial. Below is the example ‘Daily cash tally record’ prepared by Seribu Bintang restaurant.

In a day, optimum profit for Seribu Bintang Restaurant in average RM 2,500 – RM 5,000 per day and can achieve RM 75,000 per month. From this total profit, Happy Family Restaurant can divide into the cost of running business and cost of salary workers as accomplish by Seribu Bintang Restaurant.

Example for cost of running the business is order the raw material from the supplier, land rent and others. For the raw material, Seribu Bintang Restaurant use 40 – 50% from their profit in daily. For the land rent, Seribu Bintang Restaurant pay RM 2,000 per month.


For workers, Seribu Bintang Restaurant divides the workers based on their task. For example, waiter, person who cooks, cashier and a manager. Cashier also responsible as a secretary to record the expenses. Manager is responsible to their workers and their smoothness of business. For waiter, Seribu Bintang Restaurant pays their workers starts from RM 700 per month and person who cook and cashier is pay starts RM 1,000 per month. For manager start from RM 2,000 per month. This strategy can be applicant in Happy Family Restaurant.

INFORMATION ABOUT HUMAN RESOURCES


Human resources are the main important in an organization. Manager must concern about human resources, so that quantity and quality can be maintain. Human resources define utilization of human to achieve vision, mission, objective and goals of organization. This is because to increase productive contribution workers in organization.

For part of human resources, Happy Family Restaurant chooses Refah Café as our references. Refah Café own by Saipah Tapa, 40 years old, and assist by her sister, Aiedah Tapa, 31 years old. Refah Café located at Sublot 3, Ground Floor, Lot 3743, Medan Jaya Commercial Centre, 97000 Bintulu, Sarawak, Malaysia.

What can we conclude from this interview is if Happy Family Restaurant want to employed workers, we must evaluate that workers from their background and their behavior. To employed workers as waiter or waitress, we should find workers that happy and friendly with customer.

Besides that, Refah Café taking care of their workers. We must prepare the enough welfare for the workers. Refah Café gives accommodation for their workers. This is because workers at Refah Café consist of non-resident of Bintulu. Refah Café workers Consist from Bekenu, Labuan and Indonesia. Besides accommodation, Refah Café also prepared insurances for their workers. If the workers injured, Refah Cafe full responsible to their workers. For the workers attire, Refah Café not gives any particular attire to their workers. But, the attire must be clean.


For new workers, salary that Refah Café gives start RM 900 for the waiter or waitress and RM 1000 for cooking man includes PERKESO. This salary will increase if the workers diligent or the workers take OT. Salary for the workers every month and payment by hand. For holiday, Refah Café gives 3 times in a month, on public holiday and holiday on end of the year. Refah Café also gives holiday on Sunday in every beginning month.

2. What is SWOT?

SWOT is to learn how organizations associated  with the present and how the situation faced by the organization in the future by considering several factors. The factors taken into account are strengths, weaknesses, opportunity and threats. SWOT analysis is a method for the preparation at the strategy undertaken by an organization.

SWOT Components:

STRENGTHS

Refers to the advantages, privileges and abilities possessed by an organization that not have with other organization. Strengths will give organizations the ability to compete.
The sample questions are:
  • What are the advantages possessed by the company compared to the other company?
  • What can companies do differently from the other companies?
  • What are the things that enable customers loyal to your product?
WEAKNESSES

The business situation when face the competition. Weakness in the business is a lack of resources, expertise, skills and abilities that a major barrier for a business.

OPPORTUNITIES

The opportunities and potential of a business. New or innovative invention can expand the business or organization in the market. Any changes in the market offers a variety of opportunities to be exploited in business. Opportunities can make business more competitive against the major competitors and can move or shift into new markets.

THREATS

The possibility of involving external factors that can move and organizational progress. Changes in external environment also can make a threats to the organization or business. The threat is a situation that threatens from the external organizations. Threats also refers to the risk management. The best way to solve problems or obstacles that arise in the business or organization can determine. In this analysis, a smooth planning and organization should identify and list the threats and factors that prevent the organization or business from success.

HAPPY FAMILY RESTAURANT'S SWOT ANALYSIS:

Strengths:

  • Provide a variety of delicious and interesting food.
  • Service was friendly family concept.
  • Reasonable price.
Weaknesses:

  • Lack of communication skills among workers.
  • No regular customers yet because the new restaurants.
Opportunities:

  • Not only provide food but also promote about the family concept.
  • Each employee is required to attend courses to improve communication skills and in handling food also be well trained employees.
Threats:
  • Difficulties in getting employees.
  • Difficulties to get raw materials.
  • Difficulties to make a loan.

INFORMATION ABOUT OPERATION PART

For the interview at this times, we have met with Mr. Awang Ali Bin Hj. Pengiran Amin as promised. He has told to us the related overall about licensing. According to him, before applying for a license from Bintulu Development Authority (BDA), the applicant shall register the name of the company at Bintulu District Office (Pejabat Daerah Bintulu). The fees for registration of business name is RM50.00 and for the trade license is RM25.00. After that, the applicant must obtain the certification of business name from Bintulu District Office. Then, the applicant shall take the form of business license applications from Bintulu Development Authority (BDA). At that time, the BDA will inform to them on the terms and  documents required applying for a license.

In addition, BDA are very concerned their cleanliness and recruitment. According to Mr. Awang, the BDA only provides license under their power only while the business license of the company is under the supervision of the Companies Commission of Malaysia (CCM). Finally, he asked one of the workers there to explain more to us because he has external tasks that need to be managed. We thank him for his willingness to be interviewed.

Mrs. Jamilah was explained to us about the background of BDA , types of licenses available, and the qualifications and conditions of the license application for the food premise.

Information about Bintulu Development Authority (BDA):

Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) is a government agency responsible for issuing licenses for all types of business based on the Quad has been provided by:
  • Bintulu Development Authority Ordinance, 1978
  • Parties Local Authorities Ordinance, 1996 and By-Laws were enacted there under;
  • Entertainment Ordinance 2000 and By-Laws Entertainment 2001
  • Public Health Protection 1999 and By-Laws there under;
  • The Local Authority (Reflexology and Health Establishments) By-Laws 2009

Those who own the food stall, food shop or business related to food must obtain the license from BDA before the HALAL license issued by Jabatan Agama Islam Sarawak (JAIS). Once the application is approved, the owner must renew their license each year. Period to renew the license for at least 42 days after expiration. 

Unit Quality Control and Food Safety

According to Mr. Goh, food quality and safety control exercised by the guidelines. The guidelines are adjusted to be used as a reference by the operators of food stalls not only in Bintulu even throughout Sarawak. 

Starting in 2015, the new format will be used. Prior to this, the level of cleanliness of food premises are assessed only from a physical standpoint such as toilets and sanitary premises. Now, in the assessment carried a higher level and aspect emphasized is that from the standpoint of risk. This judgement using the merit system. For example, employees must maintain the health and hygiene. In addition, the merit was also assessed by looking at how the storage of food or raw materials.

The objective is to minimize food premises grade C at 5% only. According to him, the information in the form of data is important for monitoring the effectiveness of the monitoring activities undertaken by the unit quality control and food safety.

For information, monitoring was conducted with the cooperation between the two parties, namely the the Ministry of Health and Bintulu Development Authority (BDA). The purpose of the inspection by the Ministry of Health is to control and monitor the health of food while BDA also has its own ordinance other than for the purpose of assessing licensing.

The frequency of monitoring depends on the grade of cleanliness of food premises, as shown below:

  • Grade A= 1 time/year
  • Grade B= 2 times/year
  • Grade C= 4 times/year

For this new format, the premise of which did not reach the level above will be given a period of 14 days to clean the premises before starting operations again. Then, more frequent monitoring will be launched.

OPERATION PART

Interviewee Background

For the operation part, we choose Soto Nor Cafe as our references. Soto Nor Café is owned by Mr. Salamat Bin Pigi. Mr. Salamat was born on 1967, it"s mean 47 years old and come from Sabah. He came to Sarawak on 1987 to work. He was married with Sarawak women and has 5 children. Cooking actually is not Mr. Salamat profession. He starts by opening retail stores at Sungai Asap on 2000. On that year, he still works as a plantation worker at there. 

Restaurant's Background

He got the idea to open a restaurant because Sungai Asap is always visited by VIP or honourable Y.B who come to visit that place. So, those VIP who are muslim has no place to eat because most of restaurant on that place is owned by non-muslim. Therefore, the first branch of Soto Nor Cafe is at Sungai Asap was operated on 2006. Meanwhile, the second branch was operated on 2012 at Bintulu near the Balai Bomba, Bintulu. Name of Soto Nor Cafe has got inspired by soto which is the food from Banjar, Makasar and Java with the purpose of promoting that food. Average capital to open the retail shop at Sungai Asap is around RM200. From the income of that business, Mr. Salamat and his wife open the restaurant. The restaurant started on small scale only until it become more successful.

Operation of Soto Nor Cafe

Initially, Soto Nor at Sungai Asap have 2 workers as a chef who come from Sabah. Now, Soto Nor second branch have 25 workers which is 9 as a chef, 2 as a making the drink, 1 as a person who making Roti Canai and the rest to take the order. This restaurant operates under the buliding of Hotel Season Inn charge RM 4000.00 per month. Attire for every worker must be following the ethics of attire. For example covered their head with scarf in handling and the attire must be clean. Soto Nor ensure the cleanliness either restaurant, food or their workers. Worker’s of Soto Nor must attend the Course of Handling Food. Workers also must take the injection on every year. Function of this injection is to prevent the bacteria and diseases and ensure the worker in a good health while handling the food.

Soto Nor also have contract to operate their business with cantin of Sekolah Kebangsaan Bakun. Soto Nor also do the catering when have any event in Bintulu or Sungai Asap. Soto Nor operate started from 7 am until 12 a.m. and operate from 2 p.m until 12 a.m on Ramadhan. Soto Nor Cafe's concept is self-service which is only provide during lunch time and order. En. Salamat pay the salaries of his employees on a monthly basis at a cost RM 600.00 and above. For the chef, the salaries based on their experience in cooking, RM 2000.00 for experienced cooks and RM 1000.00 for unexperienced cooks. Soto Nor Cafe registered under Bintulu Development Authority (BDA). Procedure to register this restaurant will be update in the next entry.

The utilities expenses for the restaurant are RM 750.00 for water bill and RM 2, 300.00 for electric bill. Furthermore, En. Salamat obtain the supplies for the raw materials form his contact in a big scale for per day and per month and get at lower price rather than buy at market. This way is more efficient and profitable. He also informed us about the need for contingency cost for use during emergencies for example, replace the damaged chair and table.

Finally, En. Salamat Bin Pigi shared his advices and told us about honesty in business because it's includes as a worship. Besides, we need to run a business with efficient cost for example at low cost but same quality.
